A fishing village struggles to rebuild
 |
The media coverage of the affected areas of Southeast Asia are slowly fading, but this doesn’t mean that the communities are getting back to normal. Other news of the world has begun to take precedence, and as a result, the donations and support also are dwindling. The recovery is far from over.
Ban Nam Khem (see map), often spelled Ban Nam Kem, is a small, southern-coastal, fishing village approximately 25 kilometers north of Khao Lak, a popular tourist vacation spot. Most of the population in Ban Nam Khem are of Burmese descent and have immigrated, often illegally, in search for a more prosperous life for their families. The Thai government has basically ignored their presence due to the fact that these fishermen and their families are viable to the Thai economy. After all, they have been fishing these waters for centuries without reprisals from government officials.
In the wake of the tsunami on December 26, 2004, these same families have taken the brunt of the destruction and loss of life. It is estimated that 60% of the population of Ban Nam Khem is either dead or missing. In addition, nearly 80% of their facilities, boats, and homes have been lost and have not been replaced by government relief funds. Over 200 boats were destroyed. The Thai government has not recognized the Burmese people as legal residents or property owners and they have never been included in the national census. As a result, they are forced to fend for themselves and rebuild their own communities. Replacing their fishing vessels with outside donations is ongoing in order for them to pursue their main source of income.
Operation Playground is aware that there are outside organizations helping the unfortunate victims of Ban Nam Khem to slowly rebuild their lives. My goal is to rebuild a playground in this area that was devastated by the tsunami and give back the children their childhoods that was nearly erased from their lives. I hope you will assist me in my effort and make a donation. No amount is too small, and 100% of your money will go towards rebuilding the playground.
